The sky is like a circle that has 360 degrees and it's divided into 12 houses, so 30 degrees each. A house is a division of the sky.
Each house represents an area of your life. There's a house that explains how you project onto your home, your resources, how you communicate, how you are creative and like to have fun, your partner, the legacy you want to create, and more.
There are ten planets including the Sun and the Moon. Each planet represents an aspect of you. For example, Mercury has to do with communication and learning, and Venus has to do with beauty and personal values and self-worth.
What sign the planet is in is how the conversations or communication or beauty or self-worth occurs. So if you had Mercury in the 7th House, which is Relationship, you'd love to have communication with your partner. If Venus happened to be in the 10th House, Career, you would likely tie your self-worth to your career.
The form of astrology I follow goes with 13 signs, and I know we were taught there are 12 signs. More about that later. For now, just imagine there's a belt called the ecliptic that goes around the Earth and that 12 or 13 signs fall within the range of this ecliptic.
These signs are related to how we do things. Keeping it super simple and relating to the elements, do we do the thing we do in a way that is fiery or grounded or airy or watery?
Planets are what is going on (communication and learning; seeking beauty and value, etc.).
Houses is where it's going on (in the home, in career, in relationship, etc.).
Signs are how we're doing the thing.
So what's going on (the planet), where it's happening (the house), and how it's happening (the sign).
